FOUNDATION MOMENT

What is a Paul Harris Fellow?

Established in 1957, Paul Harris Fellow recognition is given to individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or an approved Rotary Foundation grant. Recognition consists of a certificate and pin.  Paul Harris Fellows can also be given on behalf of someone through Foundation Recognition points or through a combination of points and outright donations. Since it’s creation, over 1.6 million people have become Paul Harris Fellows, including notable figures such as U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, and polio vaccine developer Jonas Salk.  Use the Club Recognition Summary to see your club’s Paul Harris Fellows.

Are you ready to become a Paul Harris Fellow and join your fellow Rotarians in financially supporting The Rotary Foundation?

Thank You,

DISTRICT 7040 YOUTH PROTECTION POLICY

Revised January 2020

All Passport Club members should familiarize them selves with our District's Youth Protection Policy.  It applies to any Rotary activity members may be involved with as Rotarians with Youth.

Entering makeups. Did you know that any activity, whether it is Rotary-related or not, that you do as a volunteer can count as a makeup? For example, someone who makes masks can count that as a makeup; another person who volunteers to deliver meals to homeless people can count that as well. So pick a date every month (say, the 25th), sit in front of your computer and enter these hours! Here is a great document (on our club website) that explains it very well:

Finding a Home for Books. Back to school time is in full force at the moment, with many students returning to school after a long pause, and September is Basic Education and Literacy Month, so I’d like to ask you for your help in trying to find a home for a class set of children’s books.
As a teacher, I am always looking for speakers to talk to my students. The Rick Hansen Foundation (https://www.rickhansen.com/) has an Ambassador Program which sends disabled people to talk to students. I had the pleasure of hosting an Ambassador at the college where I teach, and since then I have discovered the many resources of the foundation. When I received an email about a children’s book telling the story of Rick Hansen (Rick Hansen – ‘The boy who loved to move’), I immediately sent a request for a class set (about 30). Now I would like to find a home for these books, and I need your help.

I would like to ask you to help me find an elementary school that would be interested in getting these books – suitable for grades K-4. You can find a link to a video (with audio and ASL translation) as well as questions on the story here: https://www.rickhansen.com/sites/default/files/downloads/boy-who-loved-move-eng.pdf
You can write to me directly if you have any ideas, contacts, etc. to put these books in some children’s hands this fall!
Secretary's Thoughts

Hi everyone, hard to believe that the end of August is already here.  We seem to be making some progress at emerging from the heavier lockdown we were first experiencing with Covid -19, but we are far from getting back to “normal”.   At any rate I’m happy to report that the Mississauga Club is nevertheless, getting ready to re-introduce the 50/50 Lottery draw that they started earlier this year, but under a different format.  With any luck, they hope to be able to roll out the new lottery with a “Chase the ACE” format by the middle of October, about six. Weeks from now.

It’s an exciting new format and it promises to give participating clubs much more opportunity to easily produce more income opportunities to raise funds for their favorite charities, and also have a chance for some lucky ticket purchaser to share in a significant prize at the end of each Game when they choose the Ace.  Under the new future we must get used to raising funds has become a particular challenge.  So let’s start to get used to this new “normal”.

In the weeks ahead I will be giving you more news about how this is all going to work.  And our Passport Club is already on board with this as we were part of the previous lottery which was only just getting off the ground when Covid-19 started shutting things down and so brought that first effort to a halt.   This new Chase the Ace format promises to be much more user friendly and as many may know this format has been extremely successful in various parts of Canada up to now.  The best part is that it will not costs us any money, and everything is “virtual”.  We have the potential to get many more of the 200 Ontario Rotary Clubs in Ontario actively engaged and the more participating clubs, the bigger the jackpots.  Also with this format there will be a minor winner with each weekly draw if the Ace of Spades is not picked and so some funds will be won by that lucky person and the club they chose when they purchased their ticket will get to decide how they wish to divide a percentage of their share of the winnings among the four charities they have chosen.

Please watch the coming bulletins for more details in the weeks ahead!

And on another subject please see the information about Nicke Salén’s special session Creating and Strengthening Connections, Even Now! this coming Tuesday on Zoom, with our own Past President Chris Cochrane and Rushton Hurley.  This promises to be a wonderful learning session for all of us just click on the Registration link below:

Have a great week everyone!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Terry

President-Elect Maddie Roy

Just two little reminders from me this week;

Have you considered becoming a benefactor to the Rotary Foundation? I have written about this in previous bulletins, but if you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out!

I am collecting cans and bottles for a bottle drive to benefit the Rotary Foundation. I am located in Cornwall and would be delighted to have other locals help out, but I encourage everybody to find a way to benefit the Rotary Foundation as we move into September!

Clarification about the Youth Protection Policy:

Only the members who will be directly involved in Rotary Youth Programs need to go through the 5-step procedure. If you are not involved in Youth Programs, you can skip this.

The online module from the Learning Center in RI is called Protecting Youth Program Participants. This module will help you to apply and address youth policies in your club or district. I cannot give you a direct link to the site because you need to be signed in for My Rotary, then look for the Learning Center.

Attendance and Makeups
Please do not bank makeups. Our attendance is currently at 52.42%. I know that there are makeups that some of you have not applied yet. Let’s get them in.

ROTARY FAR PROJECT LAUNCHES 12 SEPTEMBER!

By Margaret Shibley

Here is your chance to see some of the folk involved in the Rotary FAR Project you so generously voted to support financially.  Meet the kids, meet the staff, meet other Rotarians.

Plans are in the works for an event to celebrate the launch of the Rotary FAR Project.  Still working out details so that we can respect Covid protocols and still get as many folk involved as would like to be.  An in-person celebration will gather a small group in the back garden of the Kingston Community Health Centre, from which the Pathways to Education  program operates in Kingston. Those physically present (socially distanced and masked of course) will include Rotary Far Project staff, involved support organizations (P2E, KCHC, KEYS) representation from local Rotary Clubs and leadership, and a good number of the P2E Alumni this new project is designed to support.

Again, light on details, but a Zoom (or equivalent) addition will allow any Rotarian to attend, including representation from all 5 of the Rotary Clubs from India who are supporting the project. Particularly invited to join this portion are all of the Rotarians from the 4 Kingston clubs as well as our own D4070 Passport Club. This means YOU!

Saturday, 12 September, 1:00 or 1:30 pm. Mark it on your calendars and I will get final information to you in next week’s newsletter.
