Being an online club I'm starting a way to learn more about each other.

Starting soon, I'll contact each of you individually to meet informally online in what I call "Coffee with a Rotarian" .

It's a private, online, Zoom meeting between members while chatting and sipping coffee or a favourite beverage. Nothing formal just a way to say hello and share with each other.

At our next club board meeting, I'll publish a list of members and specifically ask each to contact and talk then write a few words about the other person for our newsletter. To help with what to write, I ask you to find out 3 things about each other you may not know or realize about the other person, then share those 3 things in the newsletter.

Over the coming months we'll learn much about each other  and, hopefully, have some fun doing it.

I'll go first by selecting a member I'll contact to meet over Zoom. Check your inbox soon!

WEEK 1-THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

Over the next while, we will share a short weekly message about The Rotary Foundation, its programs and the need for your support.  Today i have a quote from Paulo Costa, past president of Rotary International, 1990-1991. “Rotary International’s masterpiece is The Rotary Foundation.  It transforms our dreams into splendid realities . . . it is the most generous expression of Rotarian generosity - a generosity that not only brings benefits but also brings help and cooperation to solve the problems that affect mankind.  The Rotary Foundation achieves the best that mankind can possibly achieve.”

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND ITS WORK.

Rotary ABC’s - Why the Rotary year begins 1 July

Ever wonder why 1 July is the beginning of the Rotary year? Initially, our conventions played a key role in determining the start date of our fiscal and administrative year.

Rotary’s first fiscal year began the day after the first convention ended, on 18 August 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year also related to the convention, beginning with the first day of the 1911 convention on 21 August.

The next August, the Board of Directors ordered an audit of the International Association of Rotary Clubs’ finances. The auditors recommended that the organization end its fiscal year on 30 June to give the secretary and treasurer time to prepare a financial statement for the convention and board, and to determine the proper number of club delegates to the convention.

The executive committee agreed and, in April 1913, designated 30 June as the end of the fiscal year. This also allowed for changes to the schedule for reporting club membership and payments. Even The Rotarian changed its volume numbering system to correspond to the fiscal year (beginning with Volume 5, No. 1, in July 1914).

Rotary continued to hold its annual conventions in July or August until 1917. Delegates to the 1916 event in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, approved a resolution to hold future conventions in June, mainly because of the heat in cities where most of them occurred. The next one was held 17-21 June in Atlanta, Georgia.

The term “Rotary year” has been used to signify Rotary's annual administrative period since at least 1913. An article in The Rotarian that July noted, “The Rotary year that is rapidly drawing to a close has been signalized by several highly successful joint meetings of Clubs that are so situated as to assemble together easily and conveniently.”

Since the executive committee’s decision in 1913, the end of the Rotary year has remained 30 June.

Start the Rotary year with new courses in the Learning Center

Be among the first to enroll in the new Protecting Personal Data introductory course in the Learning Center. Learn what personal data is, the importance of protecting it, and how to handle personal data when you’re involved in Rotary activities. This course is recommended for all club and district leaders.

Another new course is Leading Change. Club and district leaders will learn how to adapt and help others do so as organizations evolve. The course covers how to plan for and manage change, how to successfully lead it, how to assess people’s readiness for change, and how to respond to resistance. Share the course with your district Rotaract chair and district Rotaract representatives to help them develop as leaders.

Thoughts for this week.

Some of the sections of this bulletin are repeats of articles that have appeared before. There are several members who have joined and may not have read some of this. A complete list of members, with pictures for those who have them, can be found in the Documents section under the Membership heading. You need to be signed in to get to this.
