ON BEING OVERWHELMED
I recently received an email about mental health and how to deal with being overwhelmed.
Of course I hit DELETE instantly because I felt overwhelmed by that email. Perhaps you have that feeling right now?
Something made me take a second look. It was short and to the point. I was after a magic bullet.
I didn't get it. Instead, I got a few common sense statements.
1) Take a breath, 2) Accept it, 3) Anticipate it, 4) Break it down into smaller chunks, and 5) Ask for help.
That's not very enlightening, is it?
But I did it. I thought about Thanksgiving, Christmas, my next week of work, all the Rotary things I am supposed to be doing, family, even what I am cooking for dinner. I thought about how crappy I was prepared for all of these things.
And you know what? It worked! I started to feel a bit less overwhelmed.
Take a minute to slow down.
Let life happen around you rather than trying to control it. Take a breath and accept how things are, and when you get overwhelmed, deal with it in smaller chunks. And if none of that works - phone a friend.
