Service Above Self

Plagued by famine, the impoverished nation of Niger struggles to feed its citizens. But Rotarians like Ernie and Sally Montagne, of Arizona, USA, are helping to break this cycle of hunger and grinding poverty. During a planning trip to Niger on a Rotary Grant, the Montagnes saw firsthand how The Rotary Foundation’s humanitarian efforts are supporting sustainable projects there.

“The Rotary Foundation is our vehicle of choice to enable ordinary Rotarians to make a lasting difference in the lives of thousands of villagers in Africa.”

Ernie and Sally Montagne

President's Message
Jacinthe Paille

And here it is: my last message as President of this amazing Rotary club! Indeed, it is the 50th bulletin message I wrote since I started my term on July 1, 2020. What a year it was! Through the lockdowns and curfews and other restrictions caused by the pandemic, the D7040 Passport Club has continued to meet and serve its local and international communities. In spite of everything that we all had to deal with, I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished together over the last year.

Every week when I sat down to write this message, I thought about what was going on in the Rotary world, about what I had read and/or heard, and then shared some information and inspiration. I hope you enjoyed reading me! Now I am ready to hand it over to Maddie and continue my Rotary journey occupying other positions (in this club, in the district, and beyond). After this, my third mandate as president of a third club (in three different districts!), it is time to move on to other amazing opportunities.

When I joined Rotary in October 1998, I could not have imagined how rich and fulfilling my life would become through my involvement in this wonderful organization. I am looking forward to continuing this path in Rotary for many, many years to come! Finally, to celebrate what was and will be, join me on Tuesday, June 29th at 4:00pm EDT for our club changeover. See you then!
Secretary's Thoughts

Hi fellow Passport Club Rotarians and friends,

Well the end of Rotary Year 2020-21 is only three days away and President Jacinthe and President-Elect Maddie have already said their respective goodbyes and hellos in this Bulletin.  As our Club’s Secretary I will be moving on to another Board position – Foundation Chair, - trying my very best to carry on in Ginette’s and Jacinthe’s footsteps as they have laid a terrific path with lots of challenges.   I’m looking forward to this new challenge even though these will be hard acts to follow.

I’m also looking forward to a relaxed and friendly meeting with very little formal business to conduct.  Our Changeover on Tuesday may bring a few surprises I imagine, and I hope that we’ll have some of our spouses in attendance as well!

Thanks for your support over the past two years and hope to see you all on Tuesday.  Please be on time, the Zoom meeting page will be available at 3:30PM and President Maddie will start the meeting at 4:00 pm Eastern time!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Terry

President-Elect Maddie Roy

This Rotary year has been one filled with wonderful memories, strengthened bonds, and our shared commitment to service above self. I am honoured and thrilled to be coming into my new role as President in this club.

An acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication of my predecessor, Jacinthe, is very much in order. When I look back and see what we have accomplished as a virtual club (during a pandemic, no less!) I am floored and inspired.

I am excited for all that is to come this Rotary year.

See you on Tuesday!

Good news, Barry Rowland has agreed to take over on the Meet the Member series. Thank you Nico for getting these articles. Lorne Wilson is going to take over Coffee with a Rotarian. You will see a new version in the bulletin next week.

I will be doing terminations on Monday, June 28. It means that those leaving will receive their last bulletin on Sunday. You are still welcome at our changeover on the 29th though.

Do you have any makeups that have not been reported yet? If you're not able to get them in, let me know and I can help you put them in.
There will be a new list of meetings to start with on July 1. Remember not to bank any meetings until you get to June 2022.

The Board has decided that we are going to get involved in the sale of calendars with West Ottawa again this coming year. Simmy is going to look after the Ottawa area and Fred and I will look after the rest, although we may need someone to assist in the Montreal area. We have been guaranteed that anyone who wins from the cash calendar will get paid since this is not an Ontario licensed lottery.

The Board members have also decided that we are going to support the Guatemala Literacy Project with $200 US. From the newsletter:

We are excited to announce that the GLP's 2021-2022 Global Grant #2124415 is officially open!

Join 2021-22 RI President Shekhar Mehta in Focusing on Girls' Education this Rotary year!

“There are many issues that girls face in different parts of the world, and you as leaders will ensure that we try and mitigate the disadvantages [that girls] may have." — Shekhar Mehta, 2021-22 Rotary International President

This coming Rotary year, 2021-2022, Rotary President Shekhar Mehta is encouraging members to focus their efforts on empowering girls and ensuring their access to education, resources, services, and opportunities so that future generations of women leaders will have the tools they need to succeed.

GLP Global Grants include a youth development program specifically designed to even the playing field for girls, who are often the first to be pulled out of school in Guatemala when money is tight. And once they’re in school, the rest of the GLP’s programs combine to give these girls (and their male peers) the opportunity to learn to read, study with textbooks, gain vital technology skills, and receive scholarships that allow them to reach the all-important milestone of high school graduation.

Through education, these vulnerable girls (and their male peers) are able to lift themselves, their families, and their entire communities out of poverty—breaking the cycle, once and for all.

So, will your club pledge to GLP Global Grant #2124415 and not only help fulfill 2021-22 RI President Mehta’s goal of helping girls get an education, but bring all of these vulnerable youth in Guatemala the education and opportunities they deserve?

Yes, we will!
