Since I did not receive an article from Neil, I will write about myself. This is also the official bio on my profile page.
Ariane joined Rotary in 2000 because of Youth Exchange. After their first Cross Canada Bus Tour in 1999 Fred and Ariane took over the tour until 2006, travelling across Canada four times and on the Discover America Tour once.
In 2009, Ariane and her husband were instrumental in putting on the North American Youth Exchange Network conference in Montreal. They chose Montreal so that delegates would be able to get a preview of what was going to come in 2010 at the Rotary International Convention. As volunteer coordinator with the Montreal 2010 Host Organization Committee, Ariane met Rotarians from all over the world. Ariane and Fred have travelled in Europe seeing mostly Rotarians or Rotary Youth Exchange students. They have done make-up Rotary meetings in Brazil, the Netherlands, Austria, the Philippines, El Salvador, Guatemala and the USA whenever possible.
Ariane served as District Governor in 2014-2015, doing a weekly bulletin. She is currently the District 7040 Interact Chair. She served as Youth Exchange chair, webmaster, secretary, treasurer and president for the Rotary Club of Cornwall. From 2004 to 2013 she was District 7040 Treasurer, and for the last four years of that term she was also District Administrative Assistant, responsible for the DG newsletter among other things. She was registrar and coordinator for the President Elect Training Seminar from 2003 to 2012. She is a Major Donor, Sustaining Member, member of the Rotary Bequest Society, and a member of the 7040 Paul Harris Society. Ariane is a charter member of the District 7040 Rotary Passport Club, currently serving as president. Since July 1, 2018 Ariane is the editor for the Zone newsletter, Beyond Borders.
During the last few years of her teaching career Ariane became involved in union activities, serving as president of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SD&G) area for 6 years, and as treasurer before that. Because of activities with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association, Ariane became involved with other organizations such as the Eastern Ontario Training Board (EOTB) and the St. Lawrence College Community Council. In conjunction with the EOTB, she organized a Job Shadowing project while a member of the Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise and a Born to Read project as a member of the Rotary Club of Cornwall.
Ariane moved to Canada from the Netherlands in 1960 and moved to Cornwall in 1980. An elementary school teacher, she married Fred who was employed by the Ontario Provincial Police. They will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. She has two children, Neil, also a teacher and Michele, a lawyer. Both children and all six grandchildren live in Cornwall.
Next week in Meet the Member, find out about Neil Carriere!
Best Practices for E-Clubs
Although we are technically not an e-club, we can use some of the information on best practices. At the RI Convention in Toronto last month e-clubbers from 10 clubs presented a 90-minute breakout session titled “Best Practices for E-Clubs”.
This well attended meeting (between 250 and 300 people were in the audience) used Zoom as the communication platform and several presenters were in virtual attendance. Other than some minor technical hurdles the session went off without any major problems and so far, we (E-club of Canada One) have received many positive responses.
The meeting was recorded and can be viewed at the YouTube channel of Rotary E-Club of Canada One:
All the speakers and the e-clubs that participated can be reached by clicking on their name, as the slides have a hyperlink to both the club’s website and their e-mail address.
Please share with your members and everybody else interested in learning more about e-clubs. We are looking forward to your comments, suggestions and criticism as we move forward spreading the word about e-clubs in the world of Rotary.
Regards, Peter P. Denooy
(If you watch the video, or look at the slides, you can count that as a makeup).
It's Holiday Time
There will be a bulletin next week, and then one every other week in August. On August 12, I will try to report from Europe. We are back into the regular schedule on August 26.
