April 30 Meeting
Plans for 2019-2020 will be discussed. PE Chris will outline some of his plans for the year.
The District Conference is a great time to meet up with other Rotarians and find out what has been happening in the district.
Meet the Member
The only way that we get to know each other is by having you write a little bio about yourself. We’ve had quite a few new members lately who have not seen these before. I can either take the little description that you wrote on your application, or assign you a week in the future. Contact me.
Rotary throughout the year shines the spotlight on their key areas of focus. From this there are theme months, where April is Maternal & Child Health Month.
Nearly 6 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation.
Through projects sponsored by Rotary around the world we empower mothers and minimise the heartbreak of infant mortality.
This bulletin is late because I wanted to catch April events, birthdays and anniversaries, but I did not want to send it out April 1. Next week is PETS/DTA. The bulletin may be late again, just saying.
My Big FAB Rotary Dinner
Do you have your guest list? Is your menu ready? The multiple donor form to give people credit for donations was sent out last week, but here is the link in case you need it again.
Contact Ariane if you have questions about getting donations credited for a tax receipt.
As part of our goals for this year, we had decided that we were going to send someone to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Academy). Do you know a high school student who would benefit from intensive leadership activities? Let me know by next week.
April dues
For those of you who are doing quarterly dues, our next and last instalment for this Rotary year is due April 1. Send an e-transfer/Interac payment electronically to d7040passport@gmail.com
Rotary ABC's - Our Rotary Logo is a Wheel
A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Ber, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion.
The wheel was said to illustrate “Civilization and Movement.” Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians.
Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the “Rotary International Association.” A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a “keyway” in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft.
So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem. It was revised a few years ago to give more emphasis to the Rotary part of the logo.
The Rotary Foundation Weekly Messages: WEEK 40
DISTRICT GRANTS - HELPING AT HOME Have we as a club spoken to the District Governor or our District Rotary Foundation Chair about what we want to do as a club? What do we want to do? Is there a project we would all find worthy? If so, let’s take action and get Foundation funds to come together as a club and change the world….on project at a time.
OUR PROJECT is the Youth Now grant. Do we want something else for next year?
A Note about Week 39
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ROTARY FOUNDATION STORY TO SHARE?
I’ll go first. When my former club decided help the Madagascar School Project get electricity, we worked on what was then called a Matching Grant, now called a Global Grant. There was no problem getting local suppliers for the solar panels, but they could not be transported to the school because there really wasn't a road, so we built that too. The club put in $3000. We got help from other clubs, from DDF (District Designated Fund) and from the Foundation. Altogether the grant ended up being close to $35,000 USD.
The person who encouraged me to go for this grant passed away recently. Dale Miller of the Rotary Club of Cornwall, husband of PDG Bette Miller, was the person who suggested the Matching Grant.
