September is Basic Education and Literary Month! I reached out to my daughter Emma’s English teacher to see if she would like to get the class set of the book The Boy Who Loved to Move. Will let you know what she says! Of course, if she accepts, I would personally go to the school to donate the books to her, and take photos.

Our Members Are People of Action :) This week, I’d like to show you what our club members are doing – and you’ll see, we are really People of Action! How do I know about this? One way to find out is to go to Club Runner under Attendance – Meetings – Makeups and then take a look at what our members have been entering as makeups:
  • Margaret and Terry personally attended the launch of the FAR Project in Kingston; Margaret has spent many hours getting this organized – way to go!
  • Throughout the summer, Simmy lead a senior’s exercise group
  • In July, Chris hosted the District’s Garden Party (online), and Ariane and myself attended (among others)
  • Chris also hosted Nicke’s seminar on September 1st, attended by many of our club members, including Guy, Mohamed and Ginette (among others)
  • On August 4th, the club’s Foundation Committee (Terry, Brian, Ginette, Maddie, Margaret and myself) met to discuss ideas/projects for the year; Brian suggested organizing a Polio Plus concert and is now busy getting this organized! *Save the date: Saturday, October 24th
  • Colin attended the meetings of two e-clubs (London Centenary and Olonzac Passport Club)
  • Barry volunteered for the Hudson Legion Branch 115
  • Bob and Nico did the YPP interview
This is by no means a complete list (just a few great examples!) I know many more of you are doing great things in your community! If you’d like to get to know Club Runner better, please consider attending a Club Runner workshop organized by Membership Chair Ariane this week. Details to come soon!
Secretary's Thoughts

Hello all!

Well it has been a busy week once again and yesterday my wife Mehrun and I were pleased to attend the official launch of the Rotary F.A.R. Project launch in Kingston.  Past President Chris was there as was fellow Rotarian Margaret Shibley who prepared the timely article about the launch complete with photos later in this bulletin.  I hope that some of you were able to join in the celebrations virtually, but if not there will be a recording link that we hope to be able to provide in next week’s Bulletin.  There were several addresses made both virtually and on site including greetings from our District Governor, Hadi Mortada.  Both Margaret and I have volunteered as Mentors for at least one of the F.A.R. project participants and one of the speakers was an alumnus of the Pathways to Education program who is now completing his fourth year at Queens majoring in Psychology.  Logan is acting as a coordinator to the project.

Also, in this issue is notice and details of a special joint Cornwall Rotary “virtual” meeting taking place this Wednesday at 6:30 PM the link is available in the attached article provided courteously by our very own PDG Ariane.   This meeting will feature a special presentation from Rotarian Gayle Oudeh, I hope some of you can take advantage of this great opportunity to learn more about Conflict Resolution – an area of focus which is promising to require some serious attention in the months and years ahead of us.

Have a great week,

Yours in Rotary Service,

Terry
President-Elect Maddie Roy

And it’s a go!

The Rotary FAR Project has launched

By Margaret Shibley

In the midst of a week of cold and rain, 12 September was sunny, warm, and full of hope. A small and distanced gathering of some of the many folk who have worked so hard now on the how of this project met to celebrate and found themselves reflecting on the why.

Wendy Vuyk, Director, Kingston Community Health Centre, spoke of the findings when they talked to previous alumni of the Pathways to Education Program, who left secondary school with hopes and intentions of pursuing further education. Just a few months later almost 70% had dropped out of the process, for heartbreakingly simple reasons. Registration for post secondary institutions requires a credit card; neither student nor parent had one. The promised grant came in very late, and by the time the student was able to register she was so far behind in the class work she couldn’t catch up. Another couldn’t afford the textbooks.  And it went on.

Mary Rita Holland, Kingston Councillor for the District, spoke of her own past in New Brunswick, growing up in the much  same conditions with pursuing her on BA, two MAs. Currently she is a PhD candidate at Queen’s University (research topic is home care in rural communities) she lives in the neighbourhood the larger Pathways Program and out Rotary FAR Project is targeting. Success shouldn’t be so heavily dependant on luck.

Michale Hipson, from the KEYS InSIght Program, spoke of the mentoring program we are putting in place to support the Pathways alumni who have yet to make a decision about the course of their future. More than anything else, what they young adults need from their Rotarian mentors is respect and a listening ear.

John Oosterman, the Facilitator of Alumni Relations, spoke of the impact this project will have on individuals, families, and ultimately the neighbourhood.

And finally, Logan, a Pathways Alumnus, now in his 4th year in Psychology at Queen’s,  over the years moving from one volunteer position with the Pathways team to another with increasing responsibility and impact, said not a word, but beamed broadly from underneath his mask as he stood to receive the cheque from John Gale, Rotary FAR Project Lead, President Cataraqui Kingston Rotary Club.

There were of course other people there from Rotary (all 4 Kingston Clubs, Napanee, Passport, a video from the official International Partner Club in India, another from DG Hadi Mortada, and all the folk who attended on line), but the day was about the young adults, current and future, whose lives will be different now, and about our own joy and satisfaction in our ability to serve.

Everybody gets a Rotary mask! John Gale (left), Project Lead, President Cataraqui Rotary Club; Logan, Pathways Program Alumnus, Assistant to FAR; Jon Oosterman, Facilitator of Alumni Relations; Wendy Vuyk, Director, Kingston Community Health Centre.

Like no Rotary gathering you’ve seen before! Carefully distanced, videographer between the audience and the podium, computer screens at the front. There were more people, but they were lined up in the shade against the building.
