FOUNDATION MOMENT

PolioPlus is a Signature Program of The Rotary Foundation

PolioPlus is Rotary’s priority program which supports global efforts to eradicate polio. It was launched in 1985, with the help of Dr. Albert Sabin, developer of the oral polio vaccine, as a worldwide program to protect children from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world to eradicate polio, and since that time, Rotary’s efforts, along with partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world have achieved a 99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide.

As of 2018-19, The Rotary Foundation has raised over US$1.6 billion for polio eradication. By the time the world is certified polio-free, our contributions will make Rotary the largest non-governmental financial contributor to the global polio eradication effort.

You can help end polio by making a gift to the PolioPlus Fund at endpolio.org.

First Virtual District Conference! Did you have a chance to participate in one or more of the sessions? As I am writing this, the conference is still in the future, but I am certain it will have been a success. Many of our members were involved one way or the other in the making of this conference – congratulations to all of you for your service!

Although a virtual conference is an inexpensive way to meet and celebrate our District, I believe we are going to be very happy to see each other again in person at next year’s conference! In my many years in Rotary, I’ve always enjoyed attending conferences and spending time with my Rotary family. Make a note in your 2021 calendar right away to be there next year!

Polio Plus Virtual Concert is just around the corner! Next Saturday, October 24, have a seat in front of your computer at 7:00pm EDT to watch the Polio Plus Virtual Concert- and donate as well! I have already told you that I truly believe that any amount someone gives helps. I would like to encourage all of you to donate $20 dollars (for 2020), but if you want to give $5 or $50 or $500, there is room for that as well! Invite your family and friends to join you online, too 
Secretary's Thoughts

Wow, what a conference – I did see many of our members at several of the. Breakout sessions that I attended, I’m sure that those who attended found it just as worthwhile, interesting, educational and FUN as I did.  Congratulations to Jacinthe who did a fabulous job as Conference Chair (even when she wasn’t always able to be on camera), and congrats as well to Past Prez Chris – Mr. Zoom – for keeping it all together from a technical perspective.  I am now anxiously awaiting the conference recordings as I am eager to play back many of the sessions which were often so jampacked with great information I couldn’t keep up with my note taking.

For those of you not able to make it to some of the sessions, or wanted to attend more than one of the simultaneous sessions on offer, I know you too will be waiting for the recordings to be posted so that you can use these as worthwhile makeup opportunities.  Remember each of the sessions you review counts as a makeup.

Now we have two more interesting weeks ahead of us with our End Polio Benefit Concert airing on Saturday night – 7PM Eastern time followed by our October meeting on Tuesday the 27th.

In Ariane’s Membership Corner article below you can find the link to the Polio Plus Virtual Concert and you can also link on the event page.  It’s also a great idea to copy the link from Ariane’s article and send to friends and gamily so they can enjoy the concert and also contribute to our benefit.

This will truly be a memorable event that we can all be proud of, and congratulations are due to Brian Foster who originated the idea and all those including Chris (Mr. Zoom),  and Graham Fraser of the West Ottawa Club as well as so many others who carried the ball to help make this a reality.

Speaking of the Polio Plus campaign at the end of the District Conference today, District Governor Hadi issued a challenge to every District 7040 member to get a flu shot and make a donation of $20.20 to the Polio Plus Foundation.   As Ariane explains later it’s not possible to do that in the exact amount online, so make it a bit more if you can – and get your flu shot as well!

Next week we’ll talk more about our October meeting, hope to see you all on the 27th!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Terry

President-Elect Maddie Roy

There is so much going on in the next little while for our club - the District conference (October 17 and 18) and the End Polio Now variety benefit (premiering October 24). On top of this, our friends over at the Rotary Cub of Ottawa Metro are having a trivia event on October 24 at 8 PM, and our friends at the Rotary Club of Westmount consistently bring incredible speakers to their Wednesday afternoon meetings! It is so easy to stay involved with Rotary even while social distancing.

I hope to see some of you online at the District Conference this weekend!

Have a wonderful week.
Membership Corner - Ariane

What a weekend! It was so great to see so many of our members online for the first ever Virtual District Conference. Our president Jacinthe did a great job as MC and I was sorry not to be able to make it to all the breakout sessions.

We had a Membership Committee meeting last week. The three members that showed up are going to try and communicate with anyone from the club that we might not see so often. Another suggestion that we got at today’s Plenary was “Coffee with a Rotarian”. Past President Chris did this last year, but there is no reason why we could not do this individually. You can get a free Zoom account and as long as you keep the conversation under 40 minutes, you can talk to anyone in the club, at any time. We used to have a private Facebook group for our club, but it was not used a lot. I will try to revive that to see if perhaps we can use it more often since our membership has changed considerably.

I was lucky enough to get my flu shot last week. At Governor Hadi Mortada 's suggestion at the Conference, I went to make a donation of $20.20 to End Polio Now, however, the site will only accept rounded off amounts. Since I paid by credit card, I made it for $25.00 US. Hopefully, that will take care of the credit card fees.

Last week I sent out a note about cash calendars. I should have realized not to send to anyone outside of North America, because we’d never be able to get the calendars to you. Quite a number of you felt that you would be able to do this, so we have an order of 100 calendars in. We can return any that we do not sell. As Len mentioned in an email to me, that would make us $600 for the club. The calendars work on the same principle as the West Ottawa calendars, and look very similar, but they are a joint venture of the Kingston area clubs.

Of course, those clubs are celebrating 100 years of Rotary in Kingston. I have included only a few pictures, but I have more if you want to see them. Send me an email if you are interested in selling some.

Don’t forget, join us at https://rcwo.org/page/polio Saturday, October 24 at 7:00 pm Eastern for the End Polio Now Benefit Concert.
