Welcome to a new Rotary year!

Secretary's Thoughts

It's been written doing or learning something new is a challenge that's good for the brain. If that's true, then handling this Bulletin is my current, brain-expanding, challenge.
BIG thank you to Ariane and Margaret for their assistance with this week's version.

Yours truly is like a deer staring into the on-coming headlights of a vehicle wondering what to do next. The learning curve will flatten considerably soon. Looking forward to the upcoming training on various aspects of ClubRunner provided by ClubRunner this month.

Any club member can attend this training. It's free, but you need to register through this link:

With a new found appreciation for the excellent efforts of former Secretary Terry Forth, I want to thank him for all he does for our club and for having handled Bulletin duty with seeming ease.

Now back to more brain expanding learning.
Till next week ...
President-Elect

And a new Rotary Year begins – new faces, new names, new challenges, new responsibilities.

As President Elect, there will be a lot new for me in this year. As I thought about what I’ve already learned and what I’ve yet to learn, it struck me that this process is not actually about me. It’s about the Passport Club and what members need. In whatever formal or informal organization we function, I think we all want to know two things: Can I trust the leadership? and, What can I reasonably expect from them?

Hence, a possible Bulletin theme as I track through this year, sharing highlights of what I’ve learned - for those who might follow in this role, for those who are interested in some of the Rotary mechanisms behind our accomplishments, and for those who want to be sure I know what I’m doing!

Here then is my first learning. Being President Elect is not about making your mark; it is about being marked – in other words, learning how to be a Rotary Club President.

These are several avenues I intend to pursue to be ready for 2022-23. Here is the first:

DIRECTED TRAINING
President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) covers a wide range of topics specific to the task of Club President, provides an opportunity to interact and learn from other incoming Club Presidents, and introduces several tools and resources needed in the Rotary year ahead.

PETS this year is a series of online seminars on the 17th of each month between April and August, 2021. All incoming Presidents for the 2021-22 year (even if they have previously served as President) are expected to attend all sessions. Presidents-Elect for 2021-22 are also encouraged to attend.

The District Training Assembly (DTA) includes sessions of interest to all district Rotarians and is designed to build leadership and practical skills to strengthen and grow each Rotary club.

For the 2021-22 Rotary Year, District Training Assembly will consist of a series of monthly online learning sessions on a wide variety of topics. The expectation here too is that Presidents and Presidents Elect attend.

Next Bulletin I will report on other resources I intend to tap.

Ariane Carriere, Membership chair

Last year we donated to World Bicycle Relief. Colin sent this link. This might interest you and the rest of the club https://alttour.ef.com/.

We finished our year with 67.6% participation. Notice that I did not say attendance, because we want you to think of participating in as many activities as you can. Makeup dates have been loaded on up to the end of January 2022. The rest will follow soon. You mark in your own makeups after you have signed in. This document will tell you how, just click on the link. It’s also on the website home page. What counts as a makeup? There’s a document for that too.

Note that you only add makeups, not meetings. The dates for meetings are on Tuesday of every week, so try to find a date that’s close to your actual participation. When we have an online meeting, I will do the attendance from the meeting print screen. This will save you some entries for the rest of the year. I have identified our club meetings, so do not to use those for makeups.

For those of you who were able to bank meetings last year, sorry to tell you this but you cannot carry them forward. The dates that you use should be in this Rotary year 2021-2022. We are at the beginning of the Rotary year. Please do not bank your makeups but choose an actual date for a meeting. Do not bank anything until you get to June 30, 2022. Banked makeups really do not count for our attendance credit.

Another feature on the left-hand side of the home page is a Payments link. Our e-transfer address is there as well as a PayPal link.

There will not be a Membership meeting in July.
