November is Foundation Month!

When I joined Rotary in October 1998, I was a young teacher who was eager to find out about everything that Rotary had to offer. At the time, I was starting my career in education in the small town of Montmagny, Quebec, about 40 minutes east of Quebec City, where I grew up. My club president saw this enthusiasm and one day, he said: “There’s a Foundation Seminar in Quebec City in a few weeks. Would you like to go and represent the club?”

You can imagine that I immediately said yes! I like to think of this as one of my defining moments in Rotary, as during the seminar, I fell in love with what The Rotary Foundation (TRF) does. There was a Group Study Exchange who came to tell us about their experience; I learned about how the Foundation worked and its many programs; and I met incredible people who, still today, are dear friends.

That’s why, I believe, I have been giving to TRF every year since the very beginning of my involvement in Rotary. Every time I hear a scholar or ambassador speak about their experience, I know what our collective strength as a group can do. Why don’t you join me? Governor Hadi suggested giving $20,20 when you get your flu shot. If that works for you, go for it! The easiest way to donate is by clicking here: https://www.rotary.org/en/donate. Want to read about Foundation-related topics? Go to your November issue of Rotary magazine (see pp. 58-59, and p. 21 on Giving Tuesday).
Secretary's Thoughts

Hello Passport Rotarians and Friends,

We have another "busy" Bulletin with contributions from our President Jacinthe, President-Elect Maddie and our Membership Director Ariane.  Plus another follow-up on the "making connections theme" from Margaret!

Ariane has already emphasized that we all need to pay attention to the Events section of our weekly Bulletin.  This week please make sure you read the special invitation from the Rotary Club of Cataraqui-Kingston - it's for December 1st and while 6:30 AM may seem a bit early for a few of us this is going to be a very special meeting with guest speaker RI President Holger Knaack!

This will be a rare opportunity to hear and see our RI President as he pays a virtual visit to one of our own District clubs.  You will need to register in advance and the link is right there over in the Events column.

And as a warm up to that special event make sure you take in the "Garden Party" this coming Thursday at 4:00 PM - also in the Events Column.

Have a great week everyone!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Terry

President-Elect Maddie Roy

Recently, I completed the Grants Management courses on Rotary's website. I am always impressed by the incredible wealth of information that is available to us in bite-sized learning modules! Take a break this week to check them out.

Have a great week everyone!

November is Foundation Month

Please note that in December we will once again be welcoming DG Hadi’s Foundation Moment back to our Bulletin pages.

In this week's third feature Ginette tells us about The RI Peace Scholars:

Recognitions

by Ginette Valériote translated by Jacinthe Paillé

The Rotary Foundation (TRF) offers a wide range of recognitions for those who contribute. Here are a few of them.

Sustaining Member of TRF is someone who gives $100 annually to the Annual Fund. These donations contribute to points that can be used for a Paul Harris Fellow.

Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) is given to an individual who has given at least $1000 to the Annual Fund, Polio Plus, or to a global grant approved by the Foundation. Many clubs give a PHF to a member for their service during a given Rotary year, or to a community leader to recognize their contribution. The recipients are given a certificate and pin.

Multiple Paul Harris Fellow represents a person who has given any additional amount of $1000 to TRF. The PHF pin is set with sapphires or rubies; the number of stones indicates the level of contribution (from $2000 to &9,999 USD).

The Paul Harris Society recognizes donors who contribute at least $1000 USD to the different funds or an approved Foundation grant every year.

A Rotary Club is eligible to become a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club when each active member is a Paul Harris Fellow at the time the banner recognition is requested. The governor must be contacted by a club leader to confirm eligibility, and the governor submits a request to TRF. This is a one-time-only recognition.

Membership Matters

Events
Please check out some special events taking place soon. The Garden Party will feature the garden of yours truly. On December 1 there are two events. See the Event section in this bulletin.

Notes from the Membership Committee
At our meeting this week, we discussed the continuing attempts to get us to know each other better. We will be starting earlier for those who want to come in and just chat. One idea that we discussed is going into breakout rooms so that we only have three or four other people in our group.

We feel that having regional Directors, or liaisons, are useful. Originally this was to have someone who could organize members in a particular area to attend something like a Salvation Army Kettle day, but it can also work effectively as a communication method. We will need to have someone who will be the liaison with those outside of North America. Volunteers are needed.

“Coffee with a Rotarian” was discussed again, and Nico is prepared to send out a message to investigate who wants to take part, but also to do a regular sign up that he will monitor.

Finally, we talked about “Meet the Member”, something that we did a couple of years ago. Essentially it is a classification talk that can be published in the bulletin. I have also seen a very successful series from clubs and districts on Facebook that highlights individual Rotarians. If there is interest, I will revive this idea.

Attendance is at 59.55%. I know that some of you have not marked in your makeups. Remember that if you are not up to June 30, do not Bank your makeup, but choose an actual date.

CREATING AND STRENGTHENING RELATIONS

Did you try out Zoom this week? WhatsAPP? Did you have a Coffee with a Rotarian?

I had a lovely week chatting with several intriguing Rotarians: two in this time zone, one 2 h away, and one 5 h away. I got two perspectives on Rotary History from long-time members on different sides of the Atlantic, was able to deepen the relationship with several folk with whom I’ve already had conversations, and got a beautiful view of a Canadian mountain where winter has already settled in.

I am pulling together notes and comments from folk for our discussion at the next meeting (24 Nov), so please get in touch if there is an idea or perspective you would like included in that conversation. This week I was contacting folk I know fairly well. I hope to contact some this week with whom I’ve not had much contact.
