Did you make a donation to PolioPlus when you received your COVID vaccination? It's not too late.

Our Goal to Eradicate Polio

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.

Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

The help of all Rotarians is needed to create awareness and funds to reach our goal of raising $50 million by June 30 to maximize the 2 to 1 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a total of $150 million.  Every donation helps us obtain the vaccines, transportation and materials needed in the fight against polio.

Can you help us reach our goal?  Consider donating today at endpolio.org/donate.

June is Rotary Fellowships Month!

Many of our club members are part of a Rotary Fellowship, which is a group of like-minded Rotarians, Rotaractors, partners, and friends who have a passion in common. For example, in our club, three members are part of the Quilters and Fiber Artists Fellowship (Ariane, Esther and Simmy). As I mentioned in last Tuesday’s meeting, I am myself a member of the LGBT Fellowship along with other allies as well as members of the LGBT community. Are you a golfer? Then check out the Golfing Fellowship! The link to find out more about the Fellowships is here.

Our last meeting of the 2020-2021 Rotary year is coming fast: Tuesday, June 29th, at 4:00pm EDT. I will wrap up my time as the President of this club – it’s been quite the experience, considering the worldwide context! I hope you all attend to celebrate the end of an excellent year together and the beginning of a new one with Maddie at the helm.

Being involved in Rotary for the past 22 years (and counting) has brought me so much. As the summer is fast approaching, I’d like to invite all of you to think about your involvement in the club, District and in other Rotary committees/activities, and look at how you’d like to continue in the new year. There are so many ways to do good – and to reap the benefits on a personal level. The District website https://rotary7040.com/ and the Rotary International website https://www.rotary.org/en are great places to start looking!
Secretary's Thoughts

Hi fellow Passport Club Rotarians and friends,

Well we will be welcoming June this week and starting to really look forward to the balmy summer weather ahead.  That is if you are somewhere in the Northern Hemisphere.  That said I realize that several of our members are currently south of the equator so you are starting to look forward to the Autumn (and winter) ahead of you soon.

I hope you all have Tuesday June 29th circled on your calendar – As President Jacinthe has already indicated above in her weekly message, that’s our club changeover meeting when we officially welcome Maddie as our new incoming Club President.  Our changeover meeting is always a more relaxed somewhat informal affair and a celebration of our past year.  This will take place an hour earlier than usual at 4:00 PM Eastern time and with the meeting link to our regular Zoom address at 3:30 PM Eastern time,

Please make sure you have a gander at Margaret Shibley’s article this week about our FAR project in Kingston which our own Passport Club its helping to support - both financially and as mentors. .

And I also urge you to have a look at the special award that District Governor Hadi presented to our very own Founding President - Ariane, at our May meeting last Tuesday.  This was the "Service Above Self" Award given by the RI Board of Directors to only one deserving Rotarian in each District each year.  A well deserved recognition Ariane - congratulations!

Have a great week everyone.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Terry

President-Elect Maddie Roy

A wound is dressed and tended to with care in order to heal. This week, the under-dressed wound that Canada has in relation to the tragic history of residential schools was scratched open.

"Over a period of more than 100 years, 160,000 Indigenous children across Canada were forcibly removed from their families and placed into boarding schools where their language, spirituality, culture and basic humanity was literally beaten out of them." (source - a recommended read)

The last residential school closed in the late 1990s.

Histories of violent discrimination and forced assimilation require our awareness and our compassion. Stains of trauma do not need to define the trajectory of our communities - and it is up to us, as Rotarians and as conscious neighbours, to listen, acknowledge, and respect the healing process.

Here are the calls to action from Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission if you are interested in learning more about how we can address the legacy of residential schools.

FAR Project Update

– Rotary Mentorship portion

Margaret Shibley

Terry Forth and I joined a conversation among Rotary mentors, both current and potential, for the FAR Project that the Passport Club has supported. An interim report on the entire project, as required by Rotary International, is under development, and will be passed on to you when it is available.

The conversation 26 May, however, was primarily on our experiences as mentors over the past months. It appears that Covid restrictions have affected all the recipients, as well as the staff, of the FAR (Facilitator of Alumni Resources) project. A context refresher: the FAR project itself serves graduates of the Pathways to Education program as they move on from high school to work or further education. The FAR refers those seeking employment to Kingston Employment Youth Services (KEYS).  Rotarians have taken on responsibility to mentor and support those graduates who have not yet chosen a course of action. As mentors, we in turn receive guidance from Pathways to Education and mentorship training from KEYS.

To date, 9 alumni from the 2020 cohort have been referred to KEYS to be connected with a Rotary mentor. This number is in line with targets set early in the project planning process and is very encouraging. We expect more referrals as we learn more about how alumni and mentors work best together.

Of those 9 possible relationships, however, only 2 have been established, and the FAR team has kept in touch as much as possible with all of the Alumni. With issues from any or all of food, housing, and employment insecurity, the time or comfort level to think ahead seems to have been diminished. Even for those who would have entered the alumnus category this spring, some found the remote learning framework entirely incompatible with their learning style and needs. At least three alumni have chosen to take a year off to work until they are able to return to in-person schooling, and the same may apply to those who were in their final year of high school.

So, don’t judge this part of the program by the numbers, but by what we’ve learned. We have learned that the training we received was what was needed, that the most important service we can provide these young people is a listening and respectful ear, that it takes time to build trust but it is critical to take that time. We have learned some of the things that interfere with an on-line relationship - a functional phone and a place of privacy in which to use it are not common for these kids. We have confirmed the need for our service as mentors within the larger project and are discussing ways to bring these alumni into the Rotary community to continue to build a network. We’ve only just begun.

I want to thank DG Hadi and everyone else who was a part of the last meeting for the recognition that I received for the Service Above Self award. I know people wanted to see the crystal that I received but it was difficult to see, so I copied it in its original setting.

Have your checked Coffee with a Rotarian this month? You can find it here. Brian has changed things a bit again. We are looking for someone else to do this listing since Brian will no longer be doing it. He has advised me that he is moving on to another club. Please let me know if you are interested.

It is time to let us know if you are going to be continuing for next year. David will be sending out invoices, waiting until the June rates for international members are posted. Let us know so that we do not get billed if you are not going to continue.

Have you checked out the Learning Center at RI? There are so many new courses to learn about different things that Rotary International is involved in.
