Getting Ready for our AGM
If you are interested in an executive position, let Ariane of Jacinthe know by November 30. Next week we will have a proxy for ready if you are unable to attend on December 4.
To prepare, get your makeups in so that we can see what everyone is doing.
Meet the Member - Terry Forth
Terry Forth and his wife Mehrun have made northern Canada their home for over thirty-three years. Since March 1997, Terry has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Iqaluit, serving as Club Secretary (1998-99), President (2002-03), Founding President of the Rotary Club of Iqaluit Charitable Society (2004-18) and Foundation Chair for several years during this period. Terry has also been a Paul Harris Fellow since 1998. Terry and Mehrun retired and left Iqaluit in the summer of 2018, just after Terry was made an Honorary Rotarian.
Mehrun and Terry both lived in the north from January 1968 to July 1978 and were married in Akudlik, the Inuit community near Churchill, Manitoba, in March 1969. During the initial years of their marriage they lived in Churchill, Inuvik and finally Yellowknife, NWT. They then moved to Toronto followed by Saskatoon and Ottawa from the summer of 1978 to August 1995 during which time Terry held several government positions all tied to the north. This included, among several different postings, a three-year Executive Interchange with the Polar Gas Project in Toronto and Director General of Policy and Programs for Aboriginal Business Canada (a division of Industry Canada).
When he was given an opportunity for voluntary early retirement by the Department of Industry in 1995, he chose to accept an invitation from the Inuit of the Nunavut Settlement Area to assist them with some of the tasks associated with the implementation of the 1993 Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and he and Mehrun then moved back to Rankin Inlet, (at the time NWT) in August 1995. Later in 1997 they moved from Rankin to Iqaluit.
In addition to building a successful career in Nunavut and the NWT, Terry and Mehrun have both served as volunteers in the communities where they have lived. Mehrun has been active as a Board member of the Nunavut Help Line over many years where Terry has also been an active volunteer. In addition, she has served as a long-term Board member and volunteer of the Nunavut Food Bank and a member of the local Museum Board. Terry was a founding member of the Iqaluit Habitat for Humanity Affiliate and served on the Board from 2005 until June of 2018. In May 2009 Terry was elected to the National Habitat Canada Board of Directors and served three, three-year terms retiring in May 2018.
Terry and Mehrun have been privileged to attend Rotary club meetings in various locations across Canada, India and Pakistan, Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, Kenya and Tanzania, as well as England and Malta. They were both delegates at the 2006 Rotary Convention in Copenhagen and Malmö, as well as the Montreal Convention in 2010 hosted by District 7040 and are already registered as delegates for the RI Hamburg Convention in 2019.
As an active member of the Passport Club, Terry hopes that he can make a positive contribution to the club and to other clubs in District 7040.
Documents to Check
There is a document in our Documents section about how fake emails and social media accounts are targeting Rotarians. Take the time to read that article. Find out about ShelterBox and how to prepare for November, The Rotary Foundation month.
There's also a Q & A about polio that is very interesting reading and a call for grants in Canada to take advantage of the Canadian government matching dollars.

Fundraising
Yes, I know, our club does not do fundraisers. However, we often have the opportunity to work with other clubs and raise some funds for our club because we get a cut. We also get makeup credit for the time we spend.
Recent fundraisers have been in Cornwall for roses and Cornwall Sunrise for mums. Now we are getting into calendars for West Ottawa. This is by far the best deal for us because we get $10 for every calendar sold. Len Goddard is looking after members in the Ottawa area, and Ariane will look after the Cornwall area. Anyone from the Montreal or Kingston area wanting calendars, let us know so we can make delivery arrangements. Next up is also the Cornwall Club with Christmas hams.
Foundation Month
While Foundation donations are voluntary, I would really like you to consider making a donation in the month of November. Our Foundation chair, Curry Wood, mentioned in a recent letter to all of us that we don’t have any weekly meals to buy or weekly fees, fines or Happy Dollars. Perhaps you could consider a monthly donation to the Foundation in lieu of these expenses. If you are already making a regular gift to the Foundation it is greatly appreciated.
At the very bottom of our
Documents page your will find Rotary Direct Canada or Rotary Direct USA that tell you how to go about making a regular Rotary donation.
Rotary ABC's and The Rotary Foundation Weekly Messages
Recently I found some documents that are interesting for everyone, especially new Rotarians. We will be featuring those in our bulletin from now on.
WEEK 18 - WHAT IS “EVERY ROTARIAN, EVERY YEAR” ALL ABOUT?
This initiative by the Board of Trustees of The Rotary Foundation:
Encourages EVERY ROTARIAN to participate in a Foundation program that truly makes a difference in the world each and EVERY YEAR, and
Encourages EVERY ROTARIAN to contribute to the Foundation’s Annual Fund at an amount in which they are able, EVERY YEAR.
The Rotary Foundation even has banners for clubs where every member contributes some amount to the Foundation and the annual per capita is US$100 and a banner for clubs where every member contributes at least US$100 per year…..think about what you can do to help us meet our Annual Giving goal…which is the goal to make positive change in the world around us?
IF YOU ARE A PART OF THE “EVERY ROTARIAN, EVERY YEAR” INITIATIVE I PERSONALLY THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND ITS WORK.
WEEK 19 - OUR ROTARY SUCCESS WITH THE POLIO PLUS CAMPAIGN Because of Rotarian support, more than four million children who might have been polio victims are walking and playing normally. Since 1985, through Rotary’s efforts, and those of its partners around the world, more than two billion children have received polio vaccines and have been protected. There are currently three countries that are endemic: Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. We must not stop our efforts until we give the children a Polio Free world!
THANK YOU FOR HAVING SUPPORTED THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND ITS EFFORT IN ERADICATING POLIO FROM OUR PLANET.
