In the midst of the tumultuous era of "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland, through Rotary, one young man's experience empowered him to transcend the barriers of sectarian conflict and embark on a journey of personal transformation.

In 1974, due to his participation in the Rotary Youth Exchange program, Damien, a high school student from Northern Ireland, found himself thrust into the Northern British Columbia community of Prince Rupert.  I’m convinced when Damien enrolled in the exchange program he had no idea how deeply the Rotary exchange experience would reshape his worldview and impact his life.

Attending the only high school in the community Damien found himself far removed from the sectarian divides of his homeland. As a Catholic, for the first time, he encountered Protestants without the cloud of animosity and violence that pervaded his previous interactions. 

In spite of the fact that I was protestant, Damien and I became friends. I vividly remember him telling me in Ireland that would have been impossible. The violence and hatred  dividing his county wouldn’t have permitted it. Outside that context however he had a change to challenge his preconceptions and open his eyes to the possibility of peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths.

The Rotary Youth Exchange program provided Damien with a platform to engage not just with me but with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures and that exposure resulted in increased understanding, empathy, and tolerance. Through meaningful interactions and shared experiences, Damien discovered common ground and transcended the divisions that had once seemed insurmountable.

Damien's story illustrates, the significant impact of the Rotary Youth Exchange program and how it serves as a catalyst for personal growth and transformation. By providing young people from across the world an opportunity to immerse themselves in new cultures and perspectives, Rotary equips them with the tools to navigate a complex and interconnected world. 

Over the years, through Rotary thousands of students just like Damien have been empowered to rise above the limiting perspectives of their own cultures, and many have later emerged as ambassadors of peace and goodwill leaving an indelible mark in their communities and beyond.

In a world often plagued by division and discord, Damien's journey stands as a reminder of the powerful impact Rotary programs have had on our world. His story is a testament to the power of understanding and reconciliation and serves today as a beacon of hope, reminding me that even in the darkest of times, the seeds of peace and harmony can take root and flourish.
