The changeover meeting in Canton on Saturday was attended by Ariane and I, and our spouses. District Governor Gerry Lambert has a great team in place to lead our District for years to come. Part of his vision is having the District assist all clubs as they may require. For us, it means having access to leaders and events and resources.

Please check your email... coffee with a Rotarian - our way of learning about  each other - will begin this week.

Being summer weather (warm and humid), please enjoy and think of these days next February.

Till next week ...

New Member Application

We have a new member application from Simmy Ahluwalia from Ottawa. Her application is in the Documents section. Board members and Membership Committee members approve. According to our bylaws, all club members need to be asked. If no objections have come in by Wednesday, July 17, Simmy will be welcomed to our club.

WEEK 2 & 3-THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

WHAT IS THE ROTARY FOUNDATION?  The Rotary Foundation is the charitable arm of Rotary.  It is a non-profit that is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of The Rotary Foundation who share its vision of a better world.   Its sole mission is to support the efforts of Rotarians through Rotary’s mission, and the achievement of world understanding and peace through local, national and international humanitarian and educational programs in your back yard and around the globe.

HOW DID THE ROTARY FOUNDATION GET STARTED?  The Rotary Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International’s sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary “to do good in the world.”  It has grown from an initial contribution in 1917 of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri to more than 2.663 billion dollars in total contributions.  The Rotary Foundation made its first grant of $500.00 to the International Society for Crippled Children in 1930, and to this day, it continues to “do good in the world” in the name of Rotary.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND ITS WORK.

Rotary ABC’s - No Personal Privileges

Frequently, friends ask whether Rotarians receive special business benefits from their Rotary membership. Should Rotarians expect a special discount or some preferential service just because they are dealing with a fellow Rotarian? The answer is clearly no. The RI Manual of Procedure expressly states the Rotary position on this matter. The policy, originally approved by the RI Board in 1933, is that in business and professional relations, “a Rotarian should not expect, and far less should a Rotarian ask for, more consideration or advantages from a fellow Rotarian than the latter would give to any other business or professional associate. Any use of the fellowship of Rotary as a means of gaining an advantage or profit is contrary to the spirit of Rotary.”

On the other hand, if new or increased business comes as the natural result of friendship that develops in Rotary — just as it may in situations outside of Rotary — it is not considered an infringement on the ethics of Rotary membership. It is important to remember that the primary purpose of Rotary membership is to provide each member with a unique opportunity to serve others and that membership is not intended as a means for personal profit or special privileges.

Secretary's thoughts for this week.

Pins, name badges, shirts
Please inform Ariane if you need a Rotary pin, a name badge, T-shirt, or golf shirt. We had quite a few new members join in the spring. It is easier to order a quantity than one at a time. I will be bringing shirts and T-shirts to the lunch on the Ottawa River on Saturday.

Meeting dates for makeups
Meetings have now been added to the end of the 2019-2020 year. I discovered that we were missing out on a lot of banked credits towards the end of the year. This year, all Tuesdays are marked in from July 2, 2018 to June 30, 2020. In order to get your 40 credits (see Participation Recognition), you will need to go to the end of April 2020, but of course you can then keep going. Do not bank meetings, just keep adding them to the next available date for you, even if it is in the future. Your best bet is to go for “auto-assign” because the system will put that makeup wherever it is needed. I know that for those of you who have been Rotarians before that seems strange, but then we are not a usual club, so we do our attendance credits in an unusual way.

Question about marking attendance credits
Technically you get credit for each hour that you take part in a volunteer or Rotary activity. If you take part in an activity that runs for a day, or over several hours, you need to mark that down as “Activity Name” – Hour 1, Hour 2, and so on. The ClubRunner system does not distinguish the hours so you need to do that yourself, unless it does not really matter to you. Remember that you do need to mark down your own activities, check the Download file on our website home page.

We’ve mentioned before that for some it feels really strange or disconnected somehow not to be tied to a meeting schedule. It’s also different to do things you want to do on a schedule of your own. You may do three things in one week, and then not do anything for a month or more. It is for that reason that we do not grant a leave of absence. You do not need to worry about that, it’s the way our club is. Keep marking in your makeups and while you are there, look at what others are doing to inspire you.

Website advertising
We are asking you to reach out to advertisers. Invoices have been sent to our current advertisers because our aim is still to have enough advertisers to pay for the website hosting. May I suggest doing a mailing campaign? Each club member should send a personal letter to a non-Rotarian friend who has a business that could advertise asking for support. It works because the friend wants to help his friend.
PS-I guarantee that you won't receive any ads if you don't do the ask. There are also more documents in the Documents section that explain how to go about it.

Communication
We have a closed Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1734739396840883/ but not everyone is on Facebook. We have 15 out of 32 members in the group now. During the Convention in Toronto I was able to use a Messenger group to get everyone together for a dinner. We can also use the Facebook group for discussions among ourselves. It could be more useful if we started using it more.

Dues

Invoices have gone out to everyone. You can pay by e-transfer to d7040passport@gmail.com or mail chequest to Dave Wood, 153 Bryden Ave. Cornwall ON, K6H 7A7 Canada.
