The Programs of The Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation’s founder Arch C Klumph said:  “The Rotary Foundation is not to build monuments of brick and stone. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work on brass, time will efface it….but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbue them with the full meaning of the spirit of Rotary, we are engraving on those tablets something that will brighten all eternity. "

The educational, humanitarian and PolioPlus Programs are the monuments of The Rotary Foundation and Rotarians should be proud to yell it from the rooftops. We will eradicate polio, hunger and poverty. We will help the world find peace. By supporting The Rotary Foundation with an annual gift you help build these immortal monuments of Rotary.

Will you help us make a difference?

June is Rotary Fellowships Month!

In one of the sessions I attended during the RI Virtual Convention, someone asked to post our ‘Rotary pride’ with the hashtag #Rotary21. How do you show your pride in being a Rotarian on a daily basis? I chose to post a few photos of me wearing some clothing apparel with the Rotary wheel, and one of me with my little free library, which has a Rotary sticker on each side.

Over the years I’ve accumulated a lot of items to show my affiliation with Rotary: t-shirts, shirts, hats, scarves, mugs, all kinds of jewelry, and a whole lot of Rotary pins (among others). Do you wear a Rotary pin every day? I believe it is an easy way to showcase your pride in being part of this wonderful club and organization. There are a lot of pins to choose from: End Polio Now, the theme pin, a simple member pin, and more. As we are about to start another exciting Rotary year (July 1st is around the corner!), why not shop to get yourself a new scarf or perhaps a brand-new pin? Talking about pride, June is pride month. Last summer, I joined the LGBT Fellowship (https://rotarylgbt.org/)as an ally, and I was just elected on the board of directors! I also recently read two excellent books by LGBT authors, and would like to recommend them to you: Hunger by Roxane Gay is a memoir about the author’s struggle with abuse and obesity (beautifully written and heart-wrenching); and Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo. It is a novel for young adults that tells the story of a young Chinese woman falling in love with a female friend in 1954 San Francisco. Superb! Put a copy in all young adults’ hands you know!

And as this is the end of June, let me once again invite you to our club changeover on June 29th (4:00pm EDT)! See you then!
Secretary's Thoughts

Hi fellow Passport Club Rotarians and friends,

My wife, Mehrun and I had our second Covid 19 vaccine doses this past Saturday, so we are one step closer to getting beyond this pandemic and finding out more about what our new normal will be.  I’m reminded at this time of DG Hadi’s challenge to us to donate to the Foundation when we have our vaccines.  I’ll be looking after that within the next few days and I urge everyone to do the same when you become fully vaccinated.

We should all turn our minds now to our next Rotary Year which effectively get together at our change over meeting on June 29th – next Tuesday.   It will be a combination of goodbyes and hellos as we set our Rotary sights on the next twelve months.  I sincerely hope that each of us is prepared to make the most of our experiences together and the volunteer work that we might find ourselves doing in our own communities in the months ahead.

As I prepare to turn my secretarial pen over to Chris and wish him well, I’m looking forward to some new challenges heading up the Foundation Committee.   I am looking forward to everyone’s support in that endeavour.

Have a great week everyone!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Terry

President-Elect Maddie Roy

The International Convention has come and gone another year, I hope that everyone who was in attendance enjoyed it and came away feeling inspired!

Our DG Hadi's Foundation Moment for this week felt especially poignant as we look back and celebrate a year of incredible feats, as a global network, a robust and engaging district, and as a Passport Club that is making its mark on the world:

I will meet on Monday with a local Rotary club and I could not be more excited to learn from them and share my experience for them to learn more about our club.

Have a great week!

It's time to update our logo. The word club does not need to be in there any more so I have a couple of samples:

Do you prefer the club name above or below:
Let me know what you think so we can start with a new logo on July 1.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers in our club!

Our last issue of Meet the Member for this Rotary year is by Bob Whyte.

I started in Rotary in 1973 at the Kingston Club in Ontario after I graduated from Dentistry. Later I moved to Saskatchewan for 10 years to join a Govt. run Dental Therapy program, where the Dental Therapist would treat school aged children in the schools. I was one of four supervising Dentists for a very large region. Saskatchewan is very spread out. This meant the parents did not have to take the children to the dentist and the treatment was done in the school. A "win" for the parents and the children. There, I joined the Regina Rotary Club.  I did take two years away from Rotary as I went back to school in Toronto to do my specialty in Pediatric Dentistry.  After four years back in Saskatchewan there was a change in government and the Dental program changed its focus. Back to Ontario, this time Ottawa with my wife and four children, as my parents’ health was failing. Here I set up a private practice until I retired at the end of 2019.

We have two daughters, both married. One in the business, and the other a CA; and two sons, one married in the health field as a foot doctor, podiatrist and the other single, a mining engineer and an avid sky diver, with a keen interest in Finance.

We have lived just outside Ottawa, the capital, in a rural village called Manotick, which has a lot of early Canadian history attached to it, We have been here for 30 years. We should downsize but love it here and can still handle the upkeep.

Thank you Nico for getting these articles. We'll need someone else to volunteer for these since Nico is going to be leaving us.

I will be doing terminations on Monday, June 28. It means that those leaving will receive their last bulletin on Sunday. You are still welcome at our changeover on the 29th though.

Do you have any makeups that have not been reported yet? If you're not able to get them in, let me know and I can help you put them in.

There will be a new list of meetings to start with on July 1. Remember not to bank any meetings until you get to June 2022.
