President's Message

President Maddie is in a location in Israel at this moment where obtaining an internet connection at best is a challenge.
She has sent word she'll be online in-person this Tuesday at our club meeting.
She plans to begin detailing some excellent ideas at our online meeting this week.
See you online on Tuesday.

- Past President/Secretary Chris.
Secretary's Thoughts

Please give some thought as to how you would improve this club. Over the coming weeks, we may be asking for your input to specific scenarios. Our club meeting is Tuesday at  4 pm Eastern time. Please be sure to log on early to enjoy sometime with fellow members.
I'll have the meeting "live " by 3:30pm. Till next week ...

President-Elect

I’ve been thinking about what I’ve learned (or perhaps relearned with greater clarity) this week. To misquote Shakespeare’s Malvolio, “Some are born knowing all, some have knowledge thrust upon them”. Actually, it’s probably three parts: some think they know everything, some seek new knowledge, and some have unexpected knowledge thrust upon them. The grace lies in recognizing when you’re behaving like the first, choosing wisely when you pursue the second, and surviving when the third hits you.

I can definitely say I’ve experienced the last two this week, and I count on you to inform me if I’ve not seen the first.

On the knowledge I went looking for, I was honoured to be invited to attend the ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremonies for two Rotary Clubs:
Cataraqui Kingston Rotary Club (Kingston, Canada)
Chennai Capital Rotary Club (Chennai, India), where RI President Shekar Mehta attended and spoke.

Several bits and pieces of insight, but the big one was the extraordinary colour, strength, and size of the fabric that connects Rotarians around the world – the conviction that together we can make massive changes and that we are all enriched by knowing each other.

Meet the Member - Barry Rowlands
Barry has agreed to take over this part of the membership committee. Once a month, we have a write-up by someone so that we can find out more about them.

Like my predecessor Nico Verderosa, I will start the Meet the Member program for 2021-22 with myself. My Rotary experience is very limited. I joined Rotary in 2018 when I was invited to participate in a Friendship Exchange to Chennai (formerly Madras) India. The D7040 Passport Club was the perfect club to join for someone who was far from any existing meet-in-person clubs. During the trip along with my wife Nicole, and Margaret Shibley, I got to see how clubs in Kingston had partnered with several clubs in India to accomplish incredible life-changing projects in India. After that introduction I HAD TO be a member of such a wonderful organization that did so much good in the world.

We are presently living in St Lazare, Quebec which is just off the west end of Montreal Island. My family originates in the Peterborough area of Ontario but throughout my life I have moved often. I lived in Minden and Bancroft and did my BSc in Metallurgy at Queens in Kingston. I met my wife, who was a pharmacist in Labrador City. Thankfully my wife’s profession was fairly portable because I changed from Iron Ore mining to the cement industry, and we moved to Picton, Ontario where we had our son (now a high school teacher). We then moved to Oakville where our daughter (metallurgical Engineer) was born. Then it was off to Quebec City, Montreal, and Catskill NY (where I retired as a Plant manager) before finally moving to St Lazare, Quebec. My career permitted me to see the unique differences in people, in various regions on both sides of the border as well as allowing me to learn French in a very comprehensive way.

I had been in the military for a short while and felt a close connection to the Legion. I joined the Legion where I volunteer in many capacities, from sitting on various committees to organizing sports, dinners, doing repairs and of course playing a major role in the poppy drive every year. I am grateful that I can be a member of Rotary and also have my volunteer work with the Legion recognized by our club.

That is my story. I look forward to hearing from more of you throughout the coming year.

Have you marked in your makeups yet?
