District Governor's Foundation Moment

What is a Rotary Foundation Global Grant for Vocational Training?
Established in 1965-66, the Group Study Exchange Program was an educational program that promoted international understanding through organized travel and personal contact. The program evolved as Rotary updated its grant model and placed this activity within global grants. Vocational training under global grants builds skills within a community by offering local training, supporting groups of professionals travelling abroad for rigorous study in their profession, or teaching local professionals about a particular field. This type of training is often effective in conjunction with a humanitarian project.
You can volunteer to be a vocational training team leader or nominate a non-Rotarian vocational team member – which will it be?

From the President-Elect

It has come up a few times in meetings over the past months - Just what kind of a Rotary Club are we? As we go into discussion to update our Bylaws, to be followed shortly by a Vision and Strategic Goals exercise, it seems a good time to revisit where we started - the principles on which our Club was founded.

To help those who wish to start a new club, RI describes the differences between us based on Club types, formats, and models.

CLUB TYPE: First, determine whether your new club will be a Rotary club, a Rotaract club, or a satellite Rotary or Rotaract club.
We are a Rotary club: Professionals and other leaders who meet regularly for service, connection, and personal growth. Appeals to people who are looking for friendship and service opportunities
MEETING FORMAT: Next, determine whether your club will meet in person, online, or both.
We meet Online: A club that meets primarily online. Appeals to people who travel frequently, have circumstances that make it difficult to meet in person, or prefer an online experience
CLUB MODEL: Finally, determine the approach or elements your club will offer. You can choose a model below or design your own.
Our model is Passport: A club that allows members to attend other club meetings frequently as long as they attend a specified number of its own meetings each year. Appeals to people who travel frequently or who enjoy trying a variety of club experiences and meeting lots of people. Our own model has been adapted somewhat in that we also allow for service to be counted against meeting attendance

A bit of detail from the reference above:
HOW DO PASSPORT CLUBS WORK?
Passport clubs determine how they want to operate. Here are some common practices of passport clubs:
  • Meeting less frequently
  • Focusing meetings on service or social activities
  • Setting affordable dues
  • Measuring club health by participation rather than attendance
So there you have it: We are a Rotary Online Passport Club - that values Service.

BEAUTY IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER

With the constant news of COVID and stress and government figures it is time for a good laugh.

Dateline: Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Saudi Arabia is holding the Annual Month Long      King Abdulazis Camel Festival. Camels whose owners have broken the rules of the event are disqualified.
Saudi officials have already disqualified over 40 camels from the beauty show because they violated some of the rules.

If you wonder how can a camel’s owner try to “slip in” their camel when they have used BOTOX injections to enlarge or stretch the lips and or flare the noses just travel to the month long show to see what else is happening in the Camel Beauty Contest.  Some breeders have inflated body parts with rubber bands and used fillers to relax the camel’s face.  And just as in horse racing camels have been injected with hormones to boost the animals muscles and make them more attractive to the judges.

Now you might chuckle about this but there is BIG money at stake with $66 million dollars in prize money.  So having your camel rejected can be very costly to the owner/breeder.

As an aside: On one of our trips overseas, I think it was India, we were near an area where the camels were painted in bright colours and elaborate designs and bows and ribbons of various sizes.  Our small group wanted to go over to see what was happening and photograph the incredible art and weavings on the camels but sad to say our guide said NO. He felt it was to dangerous. We were too far away to get any photos.

Back to judging the camels.  The judges are looking to see if anything artificial has been used on the animal.  Just as in a dog or horse show they have specific points of judging the animal. They examine the ears, eyes, head size, body size, guess the hoofs and legs and colourful designs that are painted on the animals,  At the end of the month long event prizes are awarded and the money distributed accordingly.

I have not followed up on the article I read so do not know if the judges have chosen the most beautiful camel in the world. If I find that out I will definitely let you know.

Yours in Rotary,

Esther Arlan
