District Governor's Foundation Moment

Our Rotary Success with the PolioPlus Campaign

Because of Rotarian support, more than 2.5 billion children have received polio vaccines and have been protected against this crippling disease for life. There are currently only two endemic countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. We must not stop our efforts until we give the children a Polio Free world!

Will you help The Rotary Foundation make history by eradicating Polio from our planet? Give today at endpolio.org.

Did you make a donation to PolioPlus when you received your COVID vaccination? It's not too late.

Happy Halloween!

October is Community Economic Development month and November is Foundation Month! Our focus on the Foundation started early thanks to Terry Forth, Chris Cochrane, and the Foundation Committee. We heard from Doug Vincent about the 'Power of One' and the beginning of Rotary's mission to End Polio. Throughout November we will continue to learn about and engage with the Rotary Foundation - so stay tuned!

Tomorrow marks the beginning of World Interact Week. Here are some fun Interact facts:

The first Interact club was chartered on November 5, 1962.

There are over 20 000 Interact clubs in more than 150 countries! That's more than 450 000 Interactors in more than 80% of countries in the world.

This week celebrate the amazing Interactors in our district and all over the world!

We all know how great it feels to do some spring cleaning to usher in a brighter season. While the seasonal changes that most of us are seeing right now do not evoke the same sense of renewal, they remind us how tough it can be to hunker down for the winter months. Now is a great time to do some autumn cleaning and donate used goods to organizations in our communities that help out those in need.

November 2nd to 4th is the virtual summit for Zone 28-32. Click here to register!

Reminder - this year's AGM will take place on December 7th, the first Tuesday of the month at 4 pm.

Remember - the next person you meet could make a great Rotarian!

Have a great week,

Member Thoughts - Donuts to End Disease

As an initiative in support of the End Polio Now Campaign, Rotary D7040 Passport members planned a community based activity in Cornwall Ontario Canada to raise funds in partnership with Cornwall First Baptist Church Youth, Freshco Foods Market & Krispie Kreme Donuts.

On Saturday, October 23rd, Rotarians David Wood, Yves Soumillon and Fred Carriere joined with youth, (Sebrina, Abiel and Andy), to sell Krispie Kreme Donuts to patrons at Freshco Foods as they left the building.  The weather was beautiful, the donuts extra Krispie, (lol) and the fellowship was truly inspiring.

The day started with a trip to Montreal to pickup the fresh donuts at the Krispie Kreme dispensary by 8:00 am.  A whirlwind trip was made to set up by 10:00 am at the store in Cornwall.  We sold through to 4:00 pm and were left with about 37 dozen of the 150 we picked up in Montreal.

As the donuts are not allowed to be sold after 24 hours from pickup, the valiant warriors moved the excess baked goods to First Baptist Church for their Sunday morning service at 10:00 am.  There they were given away to parishioners who were invited to make a donation of their choice.  The inventory was depleted and handsome donations were received to add to our earnings the previous day. In total after expenses, $695 was received from sales/donations to be double matched  by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to a total of $2,085.  As a typical dose of Polio Vaccine is costing about $2, this is enough for 1,042 Children to receive protection from a dreadful disease.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to all our patrons, donors & volunteers and to Chris & Jordan O’Brien, owners of Freshco Foods in Cornwall.  Well done folks!

- David Wood

This month's Coffee with a Rotarian is dedicated to Brian Coffey, who passed away in October. He started the first list for us.

While I was going through some documents, I came across his Meet the Member article and thought you might be interested in reading it.
