             Secretary's Thoughts

Hello fellow Passport Club members,

For many Grade twelve High School students June is graduating month.  As you know our club is joining the Kingston-Cataraqui (KC) Rotary Club in supporting their project to provide mentoring support to North Kingston grads from not only Grade 12, but also from a four-year support initiative called P2E (Pathways to Education).  Two of our members - Margaret Shibley and I have recently completed a Mentorship Training course and are now looking forward to the next stage of being matched with one of the grads to help support them as they decide on how to meet their future goals.  These are grads that have had to overcome many challenges including poverty and dysfunctional family backgrounds.  Previous students from this area of Kingston with this background have not gone on to graduate High School or pursue Post-Secondary education.

The K-C Club has decided to help congratulate the P2E Grads with special gift boxes.  Each box will contain a graduation cap for family photos, their Pathway's certificate (framed), a keepsake Pathways t-shirt with their graduation year, a celebratory cupcake, a party popper and congratulatory note from each Pathway's staff member. These Graduation kits will be delivered to each graduate by a Pathway's staff.

Any Passport Club member who would like to support this gesture with a contribution is encouraged to do so by sending a money transfer directly to the President of the K-C Rotary Club, Ana Sutherland.    This will be a way of demonstrating to these grads that they have a cheering section behind them – for the first time in their lives.  If you wish to send an e-transfer - please send to Ana’s  email asutherland@xplornet.ca or phone as text.(613-539-5294) using the Password : Pathways.

Once again, here's an important message from Rotary International:

Yours in Rotary,

Terry

President-Elect’s Message -
Events – Past and Future

By Jacinthe Paillé

The end of May and the beginning of June showcase super interesting events! Read on:

The last weekend of May, my stepdaughter Anna participated in the first online RYLA event. I had the pleasure of being invited to listen to the teams’ presentations, and I was impressed with the wonderful ideas that were shared. Anna really liked her experience, and will attend one of our meetings in the new Rotary year to tell us about it. You can find photos on the 7040 RYLA Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/ryla7040/?hl=en

On June 10th, a special event to raise awareness and funds towards eradicating polio will take place online. ‘Take Out Polio’ suggests to give your lunch money ($10 USD or more) to polio! Find the details here: https://www.facebook.com/RotaryDistrict7820/

And be ready for the first recording of the new Passport Education Centre on June 11th. I am curious to see what President Chris has planned for all of us (and the Rotary world) to discover.

Maddie's Musings

It's easy to get swept up by the tide, which as of late is a seeming return to normalcy. Living back at home in Cornwall instead of Montreal, I was almost guilty of feeling as if the global pandemic was nearly over and that we had nothing to worry about anymore. We must remember that there are many people who test positive for COVID-19 that are asymptomatic, and it is a matter of respect to be careful to not put yourself and others in the community at risk.

On that note, this pandemic has led to many exciting events being moved online where more people can participate. The Rotary Club of Westmount is putting on an event this Thursday the 11th at 7:30 PM EDT. It is a free, live show with Spidey the Mentalist, whose feats have dazzled millions of people in his live shows and his television appearances. Spidey (Bedros Akkelian) is an enormously talented showman born and raised in the Montreal area. Let's support local talent and local initiatives!

Masks
By Ariane Carriere

Are any of you sewing masks? We just recently saw a Facebook post from another club and decided that it might be a way for our club to fundraise. Simmy and I have been doing a lot of sewing so we want to put this announcement out:

For a $10.00 donation to the D7040 Passport Club, you will receive a mask as a thank you for helping our Club help our community. These are not medical grade masks, have not been tested, and are not certified in anyway, but are simply homemade masks to provide an extra barrier. This project will help provide an additional level of protection and help provide the Rotary Club with funds to serve others. You may use e-transfer or PayPal for the donation. Contact ariane.carriere@rotary7040.com if interested.

If you are sewing masks, let me know and we’ll see how we can get this together.
