Have you realized how Rotary can help you with travel around the world? Right now we have Curry and Beth in Florida. There's a picture on our Facebook page. Ariane and Fred will be there next week. Laird is in Cambodia with the Rotary Wheels for Learning team. Barry Rowlands and Margaret Shibley have just landed in India on a Friendship Exchange.

Makeups?

If you have not added in makeups lately, please send a message to Secretary Jacinthe, or to me to have them added in. We will gladly do that for you.

Those who attended our Jan. 29 meeting, as well as our Feb. 5 Ottawa meeting are all marked in. It is easy to add a list of everyone who attended.

Minutes of the Jan. 29 meeting are posted in Documents.

Partnership with Mediators Beyond Borders International

Rotary and Mediators Beyond Borders International have formed a service partnership to support our clubs and districts in their peacebuilding efforts. Read the partnership factsheet to learn how clubs and districts can take advantage of this partnership to make their peace and conflict resolution projects even better.

Greater Ottawa Area Meeting

Thanks to Len Goddard for arranging our face to face meeting of members in the Greater Ottawa area. I was able to induct two new members personally but handed out pins and name tags for three others, Deborah Wyatt, Jennifer Williams, and Barry Rowland.

Margaret Shibley and Jennifer Wyatt were officially inducted by President Ariane.

Chuck had an idea for assisting someone who needed a car. It was done with an essay contest. Someone would need to be willing to donate a car for this. If you want to find out more, contact Chuck. You can find his email in our member list.

Celebrate Rotary's anniversary

On 23 February, Rotary will celebrate its 114th anniversary. Consider making a special birthday gift to The Rotary Foundation today. When you give to the Annual Fund, you empower Rotarians like you to improve communities close to home and around the globe.

Rotary ABC's - Room 711 — Rotary’s Birthplace

The number 711 has a very special significance for Rotary. Room 711 of the old Unity Building, formerly located at 127 North Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago, was the birthplace of Rotary. It was in that historic room, which was the office of engineer Gus Loehr, where Paul Harris first met with several friends to discuss his new idea of a club for professionals and businessmen.

After extensive research, a few Chicago Rotarians restored the room to its 1905 authenticity. For years, Room 711 was preserved as a miniature Rotary museum by members of the Paul Harris 711 Club, which provided funds for leasing, maintenance, and preservation. In 1989, when the Unity Building was about to be torn down, 711 Club members carefully dismantled the landmark room and placed its contents in storage. There it stayed until 1994, when Room 711 was recreated and located at RI World Headquarters in Evanston, where this piece of Rotary’s heritage is preserved permanently.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly Messages: WEEK 33

WHAT ARE SOME FINANCIAL BEST PRACTICES WITH GRANT FUNDS?
  • Follow your spending plan to distribute and use grant funds for the stated purpose in a timely manner.
  • Make project-related expenditures by check/cheque or other traceable method.
  • If payments are made electronically by one person, maintain a paper trail showing that the payment was approved by both signatories.
  • Maintain detailed receipts and record each transaction in a ledger. The ledger should list each transaction, noting the date, amount, and reason for the transaction.
  • Make sure to share the information so grants run smoothly, and funds are secure!
THANK YOU FOR MAKING OUR GRANT OVERSIGHT TOP NOTCH!

We are still asking members to donate $50 towards our grant. Send an e-transfer to d7040passport@gmail.com.

New in Documents

In addition to the Awards that you can nominate club members for, there is a new PolioPlus Pioneer award.

We have a request from the Deputy General Secretary of RI to participate in a survey of Rotary's online tools and services.

There is information about RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award). We have that as one of our goals for the year and if we want to participate we need to get on it soon. However, Jacinthe also asked members to donate $16.00 CAD to assist a Rotaractor in going to the Hamburg Convention. So far she has an agreement from 7 people and she needs 10. Contact her if you are willing to donate.

The Waterman newsletter from George Lewis is in Documents. George raffles paintings for water Global grants. An interesting fact is that we did one of those raffles at DisCon 2014. Murray Horn, then president of Iqaluit, was the winner.

George has a request: "I want my new ART/WATER Newsletter to be interesting. Please send me photos of my paintings hanging in your home or office. Tell a little story. If you have photos of Club or District raffles, I would like to see those. Thanks."

Did you see the Bon Voyage message on the left? There is information for Project Fairs in Documents. They are an excellent opportunity for finding out about international Service.
