June is Rotary Fellowships Month!

Thinking about the current Rotary year, which is coming to an end at the end of this month, images of our monthly club meetings came to mind. As a teacher, I hosted many Zoom meetings/classes in the past year, and I always tried to make them interesting, fun and educational. It is also true of our club meetings. I certainly hope you enjoyed them as much as I did :)

Those of you who have been part of other clubs that meet in person have chosen this club for various reasons; and even if you enjoy our club meetings, nothing can replace a gathering of people in a restaurant or a café. That brings me to ask you the question: according to you, what makes a great Rotary meeting? For some, it may be the fellowship that we can take part in before the meeting starts. Of course, when done online, it’s much different than when we are face to face. For others, it may be to learn about some Rotary activities or projects; or meet like-minded friends to try to make a difference in our local and international community. There are millions of reasons people enjoy meeting their fellow club members once a week or twice a month, in person, online or in a hybrid format. But the spirit of Rotary needs to remain – through information, discussions, and celebrations.

I personally joined Rotary because I wanted to belong – to be part of a group of individuals who have service at heart. I know that anywhere I go in the world, I can find a Rotary or Rotaract club and be welcome to their meeting. I can contact my friend Paul in Quebec City and ask him what he thinks about a committee I want to join; I can reach out to Richard in British Columbia to get his opinion on a specific situation I'm going through in the club. Whether I see them once a year or on the last Tuesday of the month, I know they are present. No matter how or when we meet, we share that love for Rotary.

Once again, a heartfelt thank you to all of you who attended and participated in one, three or all our meetings this year. If you would like to see some things change, speak up - and if you appreciate what a person said or did, let them know! It’s been a true privilege to lead this wonderful club – I couldn’t be prouder 😊I hope to see all of you on June 29th as we celebrate the end of the 2020-21 Rotary year!
Secretary's Thoughts

Hi fellow Passport Club Rotarians and friends,

Well, we’re in the home stretch of the 2020-21 Rotary year and therefore my duties as Secretary. As a result, I’m starting to look forward to past President Chris taking over these duties officially at our changeover meeting on June 29th.

It has been an unusual year because of the pandemic, although for our Passport Club – since we were already “virtual” - it has not been as traumatic for us as it may have been for regular Rotary Clubs who were suddenly thrust into weekly Zoom meetings as of last March.  Nevertheless, we are still experiencing change, just the same, particularly from the perspective of morphing into more of an International Club and not simply one with geographic borders that mirror District 7040.  How this will affect us in the months and years ahead remains unclear, but it is nonetheless an exciting time for us.  All of us can imagine how our club might grow and change going forward, but there is no certainty as to what will happen.  We can be proud that we have a broad range of members including first time Rotarians as well as many members who have come from well-established clubs where they have held senior positions, including in many cases at the District or Zone levels.  Although we certainly have our fair share of older members, we also have several younger members, and I am looking forward to Maddie becoming our new President on June 29th.

I note that President Jacinthe has used her Bulletin space over the past few issues to thank those who have assisted her in her role as President and I would like to follow suit with my own thanks first to her for her strong support given to me throughout this past year and to Past President Chris as well, who saw me through my first tentative steps as Club Secretary in his year 2019-2020.

In the coming year I look forward to my new position as Foundation Chair and I will look forward to the full support of all our members in this new role.

Have a great week everyone!

Terry

President-Elect Maddie Roy

As a follow-up to my piece in last week's bulletin, I would like to acknowledge the incredible response from around the globe to the tragic news of the bodies of the children found at the grounds of a former residential school. So many people have shown the world that they are committed to better mutual understanding, robust dialogue, and walking the path of reconciliation. Our Rotary Zone and District 7040 have been among such organizations. District 7040 has an Indigenous Committee for those who are interested.

In preparation for the upcoming Rotary year, I have input my goals on Rotary Club Central and taken the time to reflect on the year we have had as well as the year that is to come. The most wonderful moments of an otherwise dreary and odd year were getting to know my fellow Rotarians, both in this club and around the district, and spending time with my family doing service projects in our community.

As I prepare to move out and become a "real adult", I am incredibly thankful that we have built this club - one which is accessible and inviting to all. I can't wait to see you all at our June meeting!

Ariane Carriere, Membership chair

It is a pleasure to welcome David Carey to our club. He's not officially on the roster yet because RI is looking for his ID number. He is getting a copy of this bulletin though. David has been with several different Rotary clubs and I met him when I attended a Rotary Club of Cornwall meeting.

Have your checked Coffee with a Rotarian this month? You can find it here. Brian has changed things a bit again. We are looking for someone else to do this listing since Brian will no longer be doing it. He has advised me that he is moving on to another club. Please let me know if you are interested. I have also been advised that Liz Pauksen will not continue next year.
How about you? It really is time to let us know if you are going to be continuing for next year. David will be sending out invoices, waiting until the June rates for international members are posted. Let us know so that we do not get billed if you are not going to continue.

There will be a Membership meeting on Thursday to discuss any further matters regarding membership.

Have you checked out the Learning Center at RI? There are so many new courses to learn about different things that Rotary International is involved in.
