FOUNDATION MOMENT

PolioPlus is a Signature Program of The Rotary Foundation

PolioPlus is Rotary’s priority program which supports global efforts to eradicate polio. It was launched in 1985, with the help of Dr. Albert Sabin, developer of the oral polio vaccine, as a worldwide program to protect children from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world to eradicate polio, and since that time, Rotary’s efforts, along with partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world have achieved a 99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide.

As of 2018-19, The Rotary Foundation has raised over US$1.6 billion for polio eradication. By the time the world is certified polio-free, our contributions will make Rotary the largest non-governmental financial contributor to the global polio eradication effort.

You can help end polio by making a gift to the PolioPlus Fund at endpolio.org.

President's Message

I hope that Saturday, October 24th, you sat at your computer or with your tablet and watched the Polio Plus Virtual Concert! Well done Brian and Chris for being part of the organization of such an excellent way to raise awareness and funds to eradicate polio. Want to watch (or watch again)? Go here:  https://rcwo.org/page/polio You can still donate, too!

So many members of our club were involved in one way or another in the First Virtual District Conference! Let me give you some examples:
  • Rick Conney facilitated a breakout session entitled ‘Green Initiative: Adopt a River’, and was also part of the Program Committee who prepared the conference plenaries and breakouts (along with Chris and myself); and President-Elect Maddie Roy led the breakout ‘Innovative Club Models’, which had 30 people in it when I ‘dropped by’. Super!
  • PDG Ariane Carriere donated two quilts to the Silent Auction, which generated $155 (Canadian) for the Rotary Foundation, and posted all the links to all the sessions, the auction and the House of Friendship on the District Website – and more!
  • Past-President Chris Cochrane or, as he is now known, Mr. Zoom, had the incredibly busy task of making sure all links worked and videos played, etc. Well done, Chris!  You did it!
  • Corina Paraschiv was the host for the breakout I had the pleasure of co-hosting, ‘Family-Friendly Rotary.’
Help me give a round of applause to all of these members!

Finally, see you on Tuesday, October 27th at 5:00pm for our monthly meeting! Our District Governor Hadi Martada will be doing his official visit, so I would love as many of you as possible to be there :)
Secretary's Thoughts

Hi all,

Well one success follows another.  After a great Virtual District Conference last weekend, Saturday night's End Polio Virtual Concert was another great success. And our own Corina was a fantastic co-host along with Simmy's husband Pardeep - congrats to both of them!  And of course also to Past Prez Chris for knitting everything together, and once again to Brian for helping to turn his great idea into a fantastic success!

President Jacinthe has provided a link that anyone can use to view the concert, if you missed it, or to still make a donation to the End Polio Campaign through the Canada Helps West Ottawa site.  In this way our club will get recognized with your donation and you will also receive a tax receipt.   You can also send this link to family and friends and urge them to watch the concert and make a donation.

And this is also a friendly reminder that our next club meeting is coming up on Tuesday the 27th at 5:00 PM. This is a special meeting as our District Governor Hadi will be making his official visit to our club.  He will also be meeting with our Board members for another thirty minutes after our club meeting.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Terry

President-Elect Maddie Roy

Thank you all for a wonderful two weeks. Not only was the District Conference a great success, but our End Polio Now Benefit concert was too. I am consistently amazed with how the Rotarians in our club and in our district are adapting to our ever-changing world.

Have a wonderful week and a very happy Halloween!
Membership Corner - Ariane

We had a Membership Committee meeting recently. The three members that showed up are going to try and communicate with anyone from the club that we might not see so often. Another suggestion that we got at the DisCon 2020 Plenary was “Coffee with a Rotarian”. Past President Chris did this last year, but there is no reason why we could not do this individually. You can get a free Zoom account and as long as you keep the conversation under 40 minutes, you can talk to anyone in the club, at any time.

We have a private Facebook group for our club, but it was not used a lot so I have revived it. You need to be my Friend and you need to like our club Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/D7040rotarypassportclub before I can invite you as a member of the private group.

We have received 100 cash calendars. I should have realized not to send to anyone outside of North America, because we’d never be able to get the calendars to you. Quite a number of you felt that you would be able to do these sales We can return any that we do not sell. Even if you have told me that you cannot actively sell, you can buy a calendar yourself. Make an e-transfer to d7040passport@gmail.com and David will let me know who wants a calendar.

As Len mentioned in an email to me, 100 calendars would make us $600 for the club, an easy way to make some money in this time of COVID. The calendars work on the same principle as the West Ottawa calendars, and look very similar, but they are a joint venture of the Kingston area clubs.

Calls have started to come out for the Salvation Army kettles. Contact your regional rep (Len, Fred, or Barry) if you are interested in volunteering. This is an easy way to do a makeup.

See you Tuesday.

Ariane Carriere, Passport Membership Chair
